Outspending the giants on ads was not an option, and when buyers asked AI for recommendations, Maestra did not appear in a single answer across 200 tracked prompts.
A daily on-site task list of new articles, updates and technical fixes, plus outreach to the third-party sites AI models were already pulling from.
Maestra went from zero AI visibility to appearing in 4,662 of 15,026 tracked AI answers in seven months, by running a daily content routine and earning placements on the third-party sites AI models already cite. Organic traffic doubled with no paid lift, domain rating climbed from 29 to 61, and AI answers helped close the company's largest enterprise deal, a $350K ACV contract.
The challenge
Maestra builds marketing automation for ecommerce brands. It is a startup at roughly $5M ARR, and its competitors are Klaviyo, Braze and Iterable: incumbents with deep pockets that dominate paid advertising.
The cost barrier on paid channels ran roughly 50 to 1. Outspending the giants on Google Ads was not an option.
Maestra had no SEO or AI search work in place, no content strategy and no visibility tracking. The starting point was a domain rating of 29, zero AI mentions, and 0% visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
When enterprise buyers asked ChatGPT or Perplexity for ecommerce marketing automation recommendations, Maestra did not appear in a single answer across 200 tracked prompts. The brand prospects did not recognize in AI was the same brand they ignored in cold emails.
AI search was the gap. Models surface content that is useful and specific, regardless of ad budget.
What they changed
The team, led by Head of Marketing Simon Semochkin, ran an AI visibility program on two tracks.
On-site: a daily task list. Maestra's content manager started each morning with a prioritized list of actions and worked through it:
- Publish new articles built to serve both organic search and AI search.
- Update existing content following optimization guidance.
- Fix the website errors flagged in technical audits.
Off-site: targeted citation outreach. The team identified the high-impact third-party blogs and sites where AI models were already pulling information, then ran outreach and collaborations to earn mentions and links there. This was not scattershot link building. It focused on the specific pages that influence AI answers.
Links from the sites AI cites lifted domain authority, which lifted both Google rankings and AI citations.
The results
First 60 days:
- AI answers mentioning Maestra went from 1 to 78 across 200 tracked prompts.
- AI models cited 53 Maestra pages, up from 3.
- Domain authority nearly doubled.
By March 2026, seven months in:
- Maestra appeared in 4,662 of 15,026 tracked AI answers across its full buyer journey.
- Domain rating rose from 29 to 61.
- Organic traffic doubled, with no paid lift.
- AI-generated demand grew month over month into a real pipeline channel.
The biggest proof point came from sales. Maestra's largest enterprise deal, a $350K ACV contract, started through cold outreach. During the evaluation, the buyer ran its own research through AI tools and Maestra kept showing up. The buyer told the team directly that AI outputs shaped their decision.
"We doubled our website traffic, closed a major logo well into six-figure ACV, and our AI-generated leads are becoming an important demand channel for our pipeline."

Maestra doubled its GEO and SEO budget for 2026 and hired a dedicated intern to run the playbook full time. AI search now sits alongside paid and outbound as a core channel.
What you can copy
- Measure your zero first. Maestra knew it appeared in not a single answer across 200 tracked prompts. A hard baseline turns "we are invisible" into a number you can move.
- Compete where budget does not decide. If a rival outspends you 50 to 1 on ads, AI answers reward specific, useful content instead of spend.
- Make it a daily habit. A short, prioritized task list each morning (publish, update, fix) compounds faster than occasional big content pushes.
- Earn placements on the sources AI already cites. Find the third-party pages feeding AI answers in your category and get mentioned there. Those links raise domain authority and citations at the same time.
- Track AI influence on deals, not just clicks. Maestra's $350K deal came through outbound, but AI answers carried the evaluation. Ask buyers where they researched you.
