What is Knowledge cutoff?

A knowledge cutoff is the date after which a language model's training data ends. Without retrieval, the model has no knowledge of events, products or changes after that date.

Cutoffs explain why an assistant may describe outdated positioning. They also explain why retrieval matters: a model with web access can discuss a launch from last week despite an older cutoff.
