Reddit Answers vs Google AI Overviews vs ChatGPT

A buyer can ask the same question in three places today. Reddit Answers summarizes what Redditors said. Google AI Overviews writes a paragraph above the search results. ChatGPT writes its own answer and sometimes lists sources beside it. All three can end up quoting the same Reddit thread, and all three can also leave your brand out for different reasons.

Reddit Answers only reads Reddit. Google AI Overviews reads the pages Google has indexed, Reddit included, and links the ones that support its answer. ChatGPT answers from what the model already knows or runs its own web searches and cites what it finds. A brand that wants to be recommended in all three needs good Reddit threads, pages Google can show, and enough mentions across the web for ChatGPT to find.

This guide compares how each one picks sources, what tends to show up where, and where to put your effort. If you are new to Reddit's product, start with Reddit Answers: what it is and how to show up in it.

How Reddit Answers picks its sources

Reddit announced Reddit Answers in December 2024 as a limited test for some US users in English, which is where the "Reddit Answers beta" searches come from. In 2025 Reddit said it was folding the feature into its main search box, so a single search could return an AI answer or ordinary results depending on the question (TechCrunch, Vice).

The model behind it comes from Google. In April 2025 Google confirmed that Reddit Answers runs on Gemini through Google Cloud's Vertex AI (Mashable via Yahoo Tech).

What matters for brands is the source pool. Reddit Answers draws only on Reddit, and every answer links back to the threads it used. Your website, your review profiles and your press coverage carry no weight there. The only input is what people on Reddit have written about your category, and Reddit has not published how it ranks those threads. Our Reddit Answers guide covers what you can observe from using it.

How Google AI Overviews picks its sources

Google documents more about this than the others. Its guide to AI features says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out", meaning they run several related searches across subtopics and data sources, then show supporting links found along the way (Google Search Central). AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so its links can differ from those in AI Overviews for the same question.

The same page sets the bar for appearing. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google says no extra markup or special optimization is required, and that appearing is never guaranteed.

Reddit has a head start here. Since February 2024 Google has had access to Reddit's Data API, which gives it structured, real-time Reddit content (Google). In Profound's analysis of 680 million citations collected between August 2024 and June 2025, Reddit was the most cited domain in AI Overviews, at 2.2% of all citations (Profound).

The difference from Reddit Answers is that AI Overviews mixes Reddit threads with everything else. For a buying question it can link a Reddit thread next to a review site, a vendor's comparison page and a news article. Your own page competes for a slot in the same answer.

Gemini, Google's assistant app, is a separate product from AI Overviews. Treat it as its own engine and check its answers separately, as we explain in AI visibility by engine.

How ChatGPT uses Reddit

ChatGPT answers in one of two ways. For some questions it answers from what the model learned in training, and those answers often carry no links at all. For others it searches the web, rewrites the question into one or more queries, and cites the pages it used. Reddit threads can turn up there like any other page.

For the search side, OpenAI says any public website can appear, provided it does not block OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and that ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends (OpenAI publishers FAQ). OpenAI also signed a deal with Reddit in May 2024 for access to Reddit's Data API (Social Media Today).

Reddit's weight in ChatGPT has moved more than anywhere else. Profound's 2024 to 2025 data put Reddit second among ChatGPT's cited domains at 1.8%, behind Wikipedia at 7.8%. Third-party trackers have since reported two sharp drops in Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations, one in September 2025 and one in August 2026. For the second, Promptwatch measured Reddit at 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations in late July and 0.52% in mid-August. Promptwatch calls the figure provisional, and the cause is still unconfirmed (Search Engine Journal).

The practical lesson is to avoid planning around anyone's headline number for ChatGPT. Check your own buyer questions, on a schedule, and see whether Reddit is cited for them.

What shows up where

The same buyer question can produce three quite different sets of sources. Take "best project management tool for a small agency".

  • In Reddit Answers, you get a summary of what agency owners said in threads about their own setups, with links to those threads. Tools that Redditors discuss often and specifically get named. A tool nobody has mentioned on Reddit cannot appear.
  • In Google AI Overviews, you may see a short list of tools with supporting links to a Reddit thread, a review site category page, a listicle and perhaps a vendor's comparison page. A strong page of your own can earn one of those links.
  • In ChatGPT, you may get a list built from the model's memory with no sources, or a searched answer that cites review sites, listicles, vendor pages and sometimes Reddit. Which one you get can change between runs.

So a brand can be named in Reddit Answers and missing from ChatGPT, or cited in AI Overviews through its own page while Redditors never mention it. Each of these needs a different fix.

If you are missing fromThe likely reasonWhat to work on
Reddit AnswersRedditors rarely discuss you, or discuss you vaguelyUseful, disclosed participation and customers who talk about you
Google AI OverviewsYour pages are not indexed, not eligible for snippets, or say less than the pages Google pickedIndexing, clear comparison and pricing pages, and earning a place in the threads and lists Google links
ChatGPTThe model has little about you, or its searches surface other pagesMentions across review sites, lists and threads, and a site OAI-SearchBot can crawl

The Reddit work overlaps across all three. A detailed thread where people compare you with competitors can feed Reddit Answers directly, appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews and turn up in a ChatGPT search. That overlap is why one good thread is worth more than ten generic brand mentions. We go deeper on why engines lean on threads in why Reddit shows up in AI answers, and on how to work them in Reddit marketing for AI search.

Your own site matters for two of the three. Make sure Google can index it and OpenAI's search crawler can reach it, and give the pages the specifics threads usually win on: who the product is for, what it costs and how it compares. Our guide to AI crawlability covers the technical side.

How to use Reddit Answers to research your category

Reddit Answers is also a cheap research tool, even if you never post on Reddit.

  1. Ask your buyers' questions word for word. Use the phrasing from sales calls, such as "best CRM for a five-person sales team", rather than your category keyword.
  2. Note who is named and in what order. Write down each brand in the summary and the reason given for it.
  3. Open every linked thread. These are the threads shaping the summary, and often the ones Google and ChatGPT pick up too.
  4. Ask the follow-up questions it suggests. They show how Reddit thinks your category splits, for example by team size or budget.
  5. Repeat monthly. Summaries change as new threads appear, so one check is a snapshot.

How to track all three

Reddit Answers has no analytics for brands, so check it by hand with the steps above.

For the AI engines, track a fixed list of buyer questions every day and record the sources behind each answer. Gensiv does this across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, from fresh, neutral sessions, and stores every cited URL. Filter your cited sources for reddit.com to see which threads each engine uses. AI Opportunities lists the Reddit threads engines cited for your prompts, with the engine and prompt that cited each one. Gensiv does not query Reddit Answers.

Takeaway

Reddit Answers rewards being discussed on Reddit. Google AI Overviews rewards being discussed and having pages it can show. ChatGPT rewards being mentioned widely enough that its searches and its memory both find you, and its use of Reddit has swung hard twice in a year. Work the threads that feed all three, keep your own pages specific and crawlable, and measure each engine separately.

FAQ

What model does Reddit Answers use? Google confirmed in April 2025 that Reddit Answers runs on Gemini through Google Cloud. The answers are built only from Reddit content.

Why does Reddit show up so much in Google AI Overviews? Google runs several related searches for each answer and links pages that support it, and Reddit threads often match buying questions closely. Google has also had structured access to Reddit's data since 2024. In Profound's 2024 to 2025 data, Reddit was the most cited domain in AI Overviews.

Does ChatGPT use Reddit? Yes. OpenAI has had access to Reddit's Data API since May 2024, and ChatGPT cites Reddit threads when its web searches surface them. How often it does so has changed sharply. Trackers reported big drops in September 2025 and August 2026, and the causes are unconfirmed. Check your own prompts rather than relying on industry averages.

Can my website appear in Reddit Answers? No. Reddit Answers only summarizes Reddit posts and comments. Your site can appear in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT.

Do I need special markup to appear in AI Overviews? Google says no. A page needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Search, and normal SEO practice applies.

Is Gemini the same as Google AI Overviews? No. Gemini is Google's assistant app and AI Overviews is part of Search. They can give different answers with different sources, so track them separately.
