What is AI referral traffic?
AI referral traffic is the visits a website receives from links inside AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot, identified in web analytics by the referring source.
It is a floor rather than a full count. Some AI apps send no referrer, so their visits show as direct traffic, and clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode arrive as ordinary Google search traffic.
