What is Generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Also called GEO, LLM SEO, LLMO.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how AI assistants describe and recommend a brand when they generate an answer. It targets the content of the answer itself, rather than a position in a list of links.

GEO differs from SEO in what it optimises for. SEO competes for a rank on a results page; GEO competes to be named, described accurately, and cited inside a generated answer. In practice that means influencing the sources a model draws on, which are frequently third-party pages rather than your own domain.
